Last Minute Costume Idea

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Still looking for a costume for tonight or a party this weekend? Well, I've got an idea for you that's cheap and super easy! With a few key pieces from your closet and some fun hair & makeup, you can easily pull off dressing up as a 1950s Greaser!

Clothes:


  • Skinny jeans
  • White t-shirt
  • Black (faux) leather jacket
  • Combat/biker boots

Hair & Make Up


  • Light gray and black smokey eye: Light gray/silver shadow all over, one shade darker in the crease, then a very light silvery almost white on the brow bone. Take a flat, angled brush and a sparkly black shadow, then line the upper and lower lash line. Add a little liquid liner if needed.
  • Red lip: Don't forget to line your lips with a nude pencil to prevent the pigment from bleeding.
  • Teased pony with a Victory Roll in front: Separate a 3" section in front and clip to keep out of the way. Tease at the crown and gather into a low pony, securing with an elastic. Take the 3" section and curl with a 1-inch curling iron. Tease at the root, then roll the hair towards your head. Pin in place with bobbi pins. 
This is such a fun and easy look that won't break the bank! This hair and make up would be great for a pinup girl outfit too. Whatever you decide to do though, have fun with it!

Look Who It Is

Well hello there! Sorry I have been MIA the last week and a half. I was out of town for work, and I am just now trying to get back into the swing of things. Today's post is going to be a mish mash of randomness, so bare with me!

I won Marcia's giveaway for a free entry to the Hot Chocolate 15/5K! I am super pumped, and the email from her kicked off my day perfectly. I guess I better get my booty in gear and pound the pavement. WOOHOO!

It was creative Halloween central in our apartment last night. I finished my costume AND carved a pumpkin. DIY for the win!

I am tossing around the idea of doing a series in November called "30 Days of Thanks" to encourage myself (and others, if you want to participate) to keep in mind what the holiday season is really about. I am going to continue to do my regular posts, link parties, etc., but I am going to include something I am thankful at the end of every post. My goal is also to post every single day in November.

My Thoughts on the Cleanse

Like I mentioned last week, I started the AdvoCare 10-day cleanse. While I know some people do it to lose weight, I was looking at it as a way of getting my mind right and retraining my taste buds to crave healthier foods.

Here's the deal though, I can't do strict. When I feel like I "can't" have something, it makes me want it even more. It may be a lack of discipline or the way my brain is wired, but I just couldn't stick with the "rules" of the cleanse. But, I am not chalking it up as a loss because it DID help me get my mind in a better place when it comes to eating and working out.

I had an honest conversation with myself the other day. (Yes, that's right, I had a nice little convo going on in my brain.) I decided then and there that I was going to treat myself better. And since then, I have made much better food decisions.

Here are the things I am going to live by:

  • Most things are fine in moderation. I went to P.F. Chang's the other day for a girlfriend's birthday, and I had the orange peel chicken. Was it the healthiest choice on the menu? Probably not, but I ate half with brown rice, and took the rest of it home for lunch the next day. 
  • Treat your body with respect. The body you have is the only one you'll ever get, so be nice to it. If you feed it crap, you'll probably feel like crap. The nice thing though is that the opposite is true, too! And, banish the negative thoughts. We are our own worst critics and also our own most powerful motivator. 
  • Get moving! Exercise is an amazing thing because it not only helps you burn calories, it also helps your mental well being too. And, for me, the feeling of being strong will always beat the feeling of seeing the number on the scale go down.
  • Water is always a good idea. On a typical day, I drink a cup of coffee or tea in the morning and drink nothing but water the rest of the day. My skin loves me for doing this, and I feel like it helps flush the toxins out of my body.

I'm not perfect, and I am by no means an expert when it comes to health and wellness. But, these are the things that work for me. I discovered these things by listening to my body and being brutally honest with myself. Yes, of course what you eat and how much you exercise makes a difference in weight loss, but so does your mental outlook.

FRIDAY, FRIDAY, Gotta Get Down on FRIDAY

Happy weekend love bugs! While the weekends usually mean yummy dinners out, I will be eating in and keeping to myself for fear that I may take someone's head off. I've heard that by day 4 of the cleanse the hangriness (yes, I just made that word up) subsides. Here's to hoping that happens for me!

I am officially signed up for my second half marathon! I will be running the GO! St. Louis in April, and I am so excited. Training starts the second full week of January, and I am so looking forward to it!

I feel like I need to update my wardrobe, but I should go through the clothes/shoes I already have and get rid of the stuff I don't wear anymore. I have seen so many cute things come out this fall, especially from Kiki La'Rue, and I want IT ALL! Anyone wanna throw a couple hundo my way for a shopping spree?


I particularly love this outfit/look that Kiki La'Rue posted on their Instagram recently!

I've already started pinning Christmas gift ideas to one of my secret boards on Pinterest. I super puffy heart love Pinterest! And, it's never too early to start getting ideas because I usually do handmade gifts. It takes time to make stuff, so the earlier I start the better. I may or may not have had to finish gifts on Christmas Eve in the past, and I don't want to do that this year!

New York City is at the top of my list for my next vacation destination. I've never been, and there are SO MANY things about NYC that I think I would love. The list includes Broadway, the Garment District, Central Park, Radio City Music Hall, shopping in Manhattan, 30 Rock, etc. Sometimes I feel like my heart is in NYC. The thought of it all makes me giddy!

Thursday Thoughts

I think this cleanse is making my HANGRY. I'm not necessarily hungry, but good lord, I think it's making me angry. Ok, maybe not angry, but I have noticed that my moods are a tad more volatile.

-TWO-

I could barely choke down the fiber drink yesterday morning...it.was.awful. But, I discovered a little trick...I added an orange flavored Crystal Light packet to the mix, then blended it with about 10oz of water. SO MUCH BETTER!

-THREE-

I bought a couple Walden Farms products to help me not to feel too deprived during the cleanse. I bought the Amazin' Mayo and the Chipotle Ranch. I've only tried the mayo so far to make some tuna and egg salad, and it tasted pretty good. It tastes closer to Miracle Whip than Hellman's, so if you are anti-Miracle Whip, then we can't be friends you probably won't like it.

-FOUR-

Martha Stewart has made some questionable decisions and comments in the past, including her recent remarks about bloggers. What irks me the most about it is that Martha Stewart has a blog network and her company regularly works with bloggers to review her products. Not a smart move on her part to say that about people who help support her "empire."

This BlogHer article is an awesome rebuttal, and I highly recommend you read it.

The next Blogger tutorial I am going to work on is coding a table that creates a gallery, like the one on my Favorite Blogs page. This one is a little more HTML focused than the imbedding an Instagram one, so I think I am going to do a screen cast video. I think it will be easier to get the point across than using screen shots and typing out the instructions. We'll see though!

How to Imbed an Instagram Photo


I mentioned yesterday that I was going to do a quick tutorial on how to imbed an Instagram photo into a post, and today I will deliver on my promise.


-ONE-

Go to your Instagram profile and click on the picture you want to imbed.

-TWO-

Click on the button with 3 dots on it.



-THREE-

Click imbed.



-FOUR-

Select and copy the embed code.



-FIVE-

Go the post in Blogger you want to imbed the Instagram photo into, then click on the "HTML" button.


-SIX-

Once you're in the HTML side of your post, find the spot where you'd like to insert your Instagram photo. For this tutorial, I am going to put it under the first sentence.


-SEVEN-

This step is optional, but I do this every time because of personal preference. I like having my photos centered within my blog posts, so I need to add a <center> tag before and after the embed code.


THIS IS IMPORTANT! If you are going to add a <center> tag, you must remember to "close" the tag at the end with a /. So, before the imbed code, you'll need <center> and after the imbed code you'll need </center>. 


See how much better it looks when it is centered? It's a nice touch, to me anyway. And, you can use <center> tags in your sidebar HTML code too, and it works exactly the same way. It *may* be my OCD, but I like things to be balanced and aligned so this helps SO MUCH!

The nice thing about embedding photos straight from Instagram is two-fold. First, you don't have to save photos to your computer, then upload them into a post. Second, people can click on the picture, and it will take them straight to your IG feed. Its just another way to get your social media presence out there!

AdvoCare Cleanse Prep

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered the AdvoCare 10 Day Herbal Cleanse. It hit my door step this morning, and I will start the cleanse tomorrow, only a day behind Holly, Mel, and the others. I'm actually really excited about it! I've never done a cleanse before, but I've heard really great things about this one and that it's gentle on the stomach.


I've done some research over the past couple days to get prepped and ready to tackle this bad boy, and I think it will definitely be doable. I've said it before, but I need to be eating clean anyway, so I this will be a great jumpstart to that habit. I *think* I am going to try out for an NFL cheerleading squad again, and this will be a nice gateway into getting ready for that.

Here are the resources I will use to help me stay on track with the cleanse:
Throughout the cleanse, I will be sharing how I'm feeling, recipe/food ideas, weight loss, etc. So, be prepared for a whole lot of healthiness here over the next week and a half.

Five on Friday: Recipes, Plans, and More

This week's 5 on Friday is related (mostly) to food! And, let's be honest here, who doesn't love food? No one raises hand. Let's get right to it, shall we?

-ONE-

It's been pumpkin central in my kitchen lately. The past two mornings I have had Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal for breakfast. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup oats
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
Directions:
Cook oats according to package instructions. After cooking, stir in pumpkin puree, brown sugar and cinnamon.


This breakfast is so yummy, and it's hearty so it keeps me full for a long time. Plus, it's less than 200 calories!

-TWO-

I have another pumpkin recipe for you! Like I said, pumpkin central.... This time though for a Pumpkin Protein Shake.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • 2 scoops sweet cream protein powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
Directions:
Add ingredients to a blender. Blend and enjoy!


Again, so yummy! It's a great snack, or meal replacement if that's your thing. I used the same can of pumpkin puree for both these recipes, and I still have some left. Yay for fall flavors!

I'm thinking about doing the AdvoCare cleanse with Holly and Mel. I've heard great things about it, but I am hesitating on pulling the trigger for some reason. It's not so much that I think I won't be able to stick to it, but cooking and preparing all of the food to keep me on track with eating clean. With that being said, I should be eating clean(er) anyway.

Thoughts on the AdvoCare cleanse? Yay or nay?

I started making my Halloween costume last night! I am super excited about it. I was inspired by this owl costume, but I am going to put my own spin on it and be a black bird. I got a bunch of different black and gray fabrics with different textures and weights, plus I am going to add some iridescent purple fabric and black feathers. If I can execute my vision, I think it's going to be really cool!

I am also going to be helping my sister make my niece and nephew's costumes. They are going as a princess and a dragon. Too cute!

So What Wednesday



Today, I am saying so what if...

  • I spilled Scentsy wax ALL OVER the place while I was trying to dump it out. I needed to switch to my new fall scent. Nothing a hard plastic pancake flipper can't handle.
  • I have no idea what I am going to be for Halloween. I want to be something fun and cool, but I don't want to spend a ton of money either. Hopefully my creative juices will start flowing soon. 
  • I have 3 baskets of dirty laundry. I've got clean undies, so it's not an emergency yet.
  • I bought the $9 bag of Halloween candy. I got the good kind, and it was for Kyra and me.

Ok, so I've mentioned before that I work as a Social Media Coordinator. Through my job, and trial and error, I have discovered some fun little tricks that I've implemented here on Jane Not So Plain. This includes the Facebook like box on my sidebar, the gallery I created for the "My Favorite Blogs" page, and some other things. 

Would anyone be interested in tutorials here and there? Again, we are doing it DIY style, so I always want to share these bits of knowledge if there is interest. Let me know!

Halloween Wreath Tutorial


I made this wreath last year to decorate for Halloween, but I never did a how-to. So, here's how to make your own fun and festive wreath:

Supplies:

  • Foam wreath form
  • Yarn
  • A sheet or 2 of felt
  • 4 feathers, 2 each of 2 different colors
  • Wooden letters to spell out the sentiment of your choice
  • Craft paint
  • Other embellishments, such as a butterfly, flower, rhinestones, etc.
  • Glue gun, scissors, paint brush

Directions:

  1. Paint your wooden letters, and let dry. Add another coat or 2 until the wood is completely covered.
  2. Wrap your wreath form with yarn, making sure to secure the ends to the wreath form using hot glue. I started out trying to be really precise about it, but it took FORever. I just started wrapping, kind of going back and forth to make sure the foam was covered. This wrapping "technique" gives it a more textured look, which I like.
  3. Decide how you want your feathers to lay on your wreath, then attach to the wreath with hot glue.
  4. Cut your felt into strips. One at a time, glue one end to the wreath form, then make a bubble/ruffle/bump and glue the other end of the ruffle to the wreath form. Repeat until you have the entire strip ruffled, then repeat for each strip of felt, layering over the bottom half of the feathers.
  5. On the opposite side of the feathers/ruffles, hot glue the wooden letters to the wreath.
  6. Add any other embellishments.
  7. Now, hang up and admire your crafty skills!

This is an easy wreath to make and can easily be completed in less than 2 hours. The fun thing, too, is that you can switch up colors, sentiment, and embellishments to fit different seasons and holidays.

Half Marathon Race Recap

Well, I did it! I completed my first half marathon, and I am so proud of myself for accomplishing this goal. I am honestly still kind of shocked and sad that its over, but this race definitely will not be my last. I drank the kool aid, and I am already looking forward to continuing on my running journey.



On to the race recap...

I ran the MO' Cowbell race with my mom, aunt, brother-in-law, and second cousin. The ladies all gathered together at the starting line, and it really helped ease my nerves knowing that we were in this together. After we started, we took off on our own and away we went. It was cold (colder than I am used to running in anyway), and I had planned on starting off walking, but I immediately started jogging to get my muscles warmed up faster.

The first half of the race went pretty well, and I noticed that my pace was faster than I was expecting. Thank goodness for race day adrenaline! I didn't feel like I was over doing it, so tried to maintain my speed. I stopped to walk a couple times, mainly through water/gatorade stations, and I think this helped me maintain my endurance over all.

Once I reached mile 10 though, things started changing a bit. I could feel the fatigue set in, and my legs felt very heavy. On this course, the majority of mile 10 is a steady incline, which was rough. At this point, I was in pain. My entire bottom half hurt so bad, and I stopped to walk a little bit. I took literally two steps and had to start running again because I knew if stopped to walk that I wouldn't start back up again.

Side note: When I say running, I think it looks more like a jog. Though I walked less than a mile total, there were times that I was 'running' VERY slowly.

At mile 11, I started to get emotional. The pain mixed with the mental challenge was a little overwhelming. I just wanted to be done, but I had to keep telling myself that I was almost there, that I could do it. I was struggling physically and mentally, and I am 100% positive that I looked miserable. Then, all of a sudden, as I neared mile 12, I see this guy running towards me, and I realized it was Kyra! He jogged along with me for a bit taking a video and giving me a pep talk. It was exactly what I needed to get my spirits back up.

I felt like the last mile was never going to end! Again, another mental challenge. But then, there I was crossing the finish line. I wish I could say that I was consumed with pride, but at this point, I was in so much pain that I couldn't think about much else. I made my way to the physical therapists to get stretched out, and it made a world of difference!


Overall, regardless of the temporary pain, it was an amazing experience. I had my doubts that I would actually be able to complete a half marathon. Would I be able to stick to training? Can by body physically handle it? I don't know if I am just stubborn or what, but I pushed away the doubts and did it.

It's amazing what you can do if you push yourself. Whether its a race or another goal you set for yourself, you can do it!

It's officially Red October here in the Lou, and it is definitely one of the most exciting times of the year! I love me some Cardinals baseball, especially when they're in the playoffs.

I don't really care whose fault it is, as in Dems vs. Republicans, that the government shut down, but YOU'RE MAKING OUR COUNTRY LOOK BAD! Get your ish together and figure it out!

Outfit of the Day

Have I ever told you guys about my love of fashion? As long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with clothes and accessories. When I was a little girl, I would change my clothes literally five times a day because I loved putting together different outfits. And, of course, playing dress up was an almost daily occurrence.

Fast forward through the awkward school-aged years and let's go straight to college. My first job in college was at this super cute (and affordable) boutique. I was in heaven, and it really is a miracle that I made any money at all because I feel like I spent a ton of it buying clothes. Anyway, I got to style displays, mannequins, and of course, the customers. It was like playing dress up all day, every day, and it.was.wonderful!


Before I dive in to my outfit of the day, I want to be clear...I don't always dress like a self-proclaimed fashionista. There are many days that I just throw something on and don't think too much of it. But, on the days that I put more thought into creating a cute outfit, I feel more confident and better about myself. It's all about treating yourself well, whether it's drinking plenty of water, going for a run, or putting on an outfit that makes you feel pretty.

I LOVE leopard print! If styled incorrectly, it can be a little cheap looking, but if you pair it with the right outfit, it's super chic. It just adds such a fun pop of style to most outfits. Leopard print is not only a staple in my closet, but also a fun neutral!

Easy On-the-Go Lunch

Since my race is only a handful of days away, I am trying to fuel my body with nutritious food that will help ensure that I have the stamina to complete 13.1 miles. Basically, I am focusing on eating lots of fruits and veggies, lean meat, and brown rice and/or whole wheat pasta.

Which, now that I think about it, this is how I should be eating all of the time. Hopefully this will be the jump start I need to get my booty in gear! 


Here's what my lunch has consisted of the past 2 days:
  • Sliced peppers, snap peas, & broccoli from the salad bar at the grocery store
  • 2 turkey sausage sticks
  • 1 Mini Babybel Cheddar round
  • Handful of pretzels
Yesterday, I went to the grocery store and picked up a styrofoam container full of veggies, grabbed a 4-pack of the turkey sausage sticks, and a bag of the cheddar Babybels. The veggies and turkey sausage sticks were perfect for two lunches, and I still have pretzels and cheese left. It was really yummy and super easy!

Is it the best lunch option out there? Maybe not, but it is a heck of a lot better than grabbing fast food. For me, the best part about this meal is that it was balanced: a good dose of veggies and protein plus healthier amounts of fat and carbs. AND, I also have a new found love of snap peas! YAY!
