3 Things I've Discovered From Running

Though I haven't been running for very long, I have discovered a few things along the way...

1. I love the area in which I live.

No matter what time of day, there are always people out and about. Whether it's kids walking to school in the morning or people walking their dogs in the evening, I love that I am never along while pounding the pavement.

Speaking of kids walking to school...today I passed a middle school girl, and she just seemed so cool. I think if I were a middle school girl, I would hope to be her...Ya know, me how I am now, not real-life Tori how she was in middle school back in the day... Anyway, this girl had brown hair with blue ombre ends, a musical instrument in one hand, and a travel mug of hot tea in the other. I don't what it was that struck me about her, but she just seemed awesome.

2. Runners will do whatever it takes to recover properly.

Today was a prime example of this. I did my last long run for my first half marathon this morning before work, and I purposefully wore a maxi skirt to the office so I could wear my compression sleeves on my calves without anyone noticing.

More evidence of this can be found here in reference to my Power Jug.

3. The running community as a whole is super supportive.

I have seen this come from a number of different arenas. The first example that comes to mind is the running/blogging community and how they wrap their arms around those in need...Holly raising $2,500 for her St. Jude marathon, the page started for Baby Harper, and so many more instances.

I experienced this support first hand on a run a few weeks ago. I was running in my neighborhood and for whatever reason, I was giving mental high fives to the other runners I passed. No matter how fast/good of a runner you are, it's always nice to have good vibes sent your way, ya know!? Well, as I was doing this, I passed a woman who said, "Good job!" as I ran by. It has stuck with me ever since, and she will never know how much of a boost she gave me that day.

Half Marathon No. 1

Some of you may have picked up on this, but I haven't been able to come out and just say it...I am running a half marathon on October 6th! Before I tell you the story, let me just say that if you have told me six months ago that I would be doing this, I would have told you that you were off your friggin' rocker!

Here's how it all happened...

My mom trained to run her first 5K in the spring, and she did great! After the race, it was obvious that she had caught the running bug but didn't know where to go from there.

Enter my Aunt Carol. She completed a half marathon a couple years ago, and she decided she was going to do the same race again this fall.

One thing led to another, and my mom decided that she was going to train for the half and surprise my aunt. Then I got to thinking, if they can do it, I should be able to do it too.

My mom, brother-in-law, and I all decided in June/July that we were going to train and surprise Aunt Carol! Since the race is next week and we didn't want to catch her off guard on race day (no added mental stress needed for any of us), my mom let the cat out of the bag last night.

My aunt is so excited, and we are all excited too! I am so glad that she (and my mom) inspired me to start running. I never thought I was physically capable of doing anything like this, so I am humbled with every run I complete (no matter how short of a distance).

When I first started training, and honestly, up until this past weekend, I didn't know if I would really be able to do this or not. Luckily, my long run this past Sunday was amazing. It was the first time that it all felt good, like something clicked. I knew after this run, with its nice little confidence boost, that I could do this.

My Favorite Fitness Gear, Part 2

Today, I'm taking a cue from Skinny Meg and sharing my favorite fitness gear. A few weeks back, I told you about some items I got for my birthday that I love, so today I am going to expand on that list!

-ONE-

Nathan Triangle Hydration Waist Pack

Source
So far, I love this thing. It did take a couple runs to figure out exactly where it needed to sit around my waist to minimize bouncing, moving, etc. After I found the sweet spot, it doesn't really move much at all. It also has a zipper pouch that fits my house key, phone (in the case), and any gummies or jelly beans I have with me.

-TWO-

Women's Active by Old Navy Control Max Bottoms

Source
I LOVE these capris! They fit well, hold it all in, and are super comfy. I actually have two pairs, the ones pictured above and these, and I love them both! If you are looking for workout bottoms, I definitely recommend these because not only are they awesome, they are really reasonably priced too.

-THREE-

Complete Woman™by Complete Nutrition

Source
I just started taking this multivitamin a couple days ago, and so far, so good. I definitely needed to start taking a vitamin because I don't eat a ton of vegetables, and I definitely don't get enough calcium. Hopefully, this will do the trick and keep me healthy!

-FOUR-

Power Jug by Complete Nutrition

I couldn't find the product for purchase online, but they do have them for sale in Complete Nutrition stores.

This thing is 64oz of pure bliss. Haha, ok not really, but it is awesome only having to fill up a water bottle once (or twice) a day and know exactly how much your water intake is without much thought. I have said it before, but I feel so.much.better when I stay hydrated. Knowing that I am getting plenty of water will also help my in my workouts!

One Top, Two Looks

I am all about having a wardrobe that works for many occasions, so most of the pieces in my closet can be mixed and matched. Here is a prime example of a couple outfits I wore last week: the day look I wore to the office, the night look was worn to a dinner with my girlfriends.

Blue Shirt: Day

Blue Shirt: Night

Going from day to night doesn't always mean dressing a look up or down. To me, its more about what's appropriate for the situation and working with the pieces you have to create super cute looks!

5 on Friday and a NSV

Happy Friday, JNSPers! My weekend will be the perfect mix of a couple things to do paired with plenty of downtime, so I am really looking forward to a bit of a slower pace.

On to today's post...a little 5 on Friday action peppered with a Non-Scale Victory and my current song obsession!

-ONE-

I super puffy heart love iOS7! It's like I got a brand new, upgraded phone without spending a dime. I'm still getting used to some of the new features, but I think it's super sleek!

-TWO-

My Harry Potter bracelet came in the mail yesterday! And, you can bet your booty that I'm rockin' it today :)

-THREE-

On Tuesday, I had plans for dinner with my girlfriends to celebrate a birthday. I was going to get in a quick run before I went, but it started raining and that idea got nixed. Instead, I took my workout clothes with me to dinner and headed to the gym after I was done. Though, I much prefer running outside, I still got the miles in on the treadmill. I am proud of myself for sticking with my fitness commitments even though life had other plans!

I updated my intro/bio badge on my sidebar! I think it is more visually appealing, as well as more informational in regards to what JNSP is all about. When I first started blogging, I thought I would mainly focus on sewing and crafts with a little fashion thrown in. As things have progressed, I have focused a lot more on my health and fitness journey, and I have met a lot of great people because of it!

Now, I want JNSP's focus to be on the DIY life. I whole heartedly believe we have the power within ourselves to create the best life possible. Let's be honest here, most of us can't afford personal trainers/stylists/chefs, interior decorators, etc., so we're going to do it ourselves!  I want to continue sharing the things I am doing in my life in hopes that it will help you in your life as well.

-FIVE-

In honor of #backthatazzup, I would like to share my current song obsession...

Have a great weekend, lovelies!

So What Wednesday

Posts two days in a row!? Man, I am on top of things ;) You all know I love a good link party, so I am going to once again participate in Life After I Dew's So What Wednesday.

So what if I love Chipotle WAY TOO MUCH. It's just so good in my belly!

So what if I downloaded iOS7 as soon as it was available. My inner-tech geek is super pumped!

So what if I dye my hair from a $7 box from Walgreens. It does the trick, and it looks good, too!

So what if I had to delete a ton of pictures and a handful of apps from my phone in order to download iOS7. Most of the pictures have already made it onto my computer, and I deleted the apps I don't use. It kinda felt nice to purge what I didn't need.

So what if I am looking forward to cooler temps even though I am a self-proclaimed sun goddess. Hello leggings and boots!

So what if I could watch NCIS and Friends all day everyday. They're great shows!

What are you saying so what to?

Random Thoughts

Hello lovelies! Once again, le brainz is going a mile a minute, so I am going to just spill some of it out here...

-ONE-

The BBQ Kyra and I hosted on Sunday was a complete success! We got pretty much everything done [except our bedroom and my craft room], and Kyra made the most amazing food you could EVER imagine. Definitely not #gysts or DietBet friendly, but it was irresistible! He made ribs, chicken, green beans, potato salad, rolls, and a grilled fruit salad [pictured above]. I hosted, cleaned, decorated, and made sangria and puppy chow. Overall, it was such a great day!

-TWO-

I have finally put the finishing touches on my long run playlist! It's 3.5 hours full of pump up jams, and its ready and waiting for me on my iPod Shuffle. Some of my favorites are:

Blurred Lines (feat. T.I. & Pharrell Williams) by Robin Thicke on Grooveshark

-THREE-

Going back to the BBQ for a minute... hosting a dinner/having people over is a lot of work! It definitely gave me the push I needed to make some major progress on our apartment, but boy oh boy did it kick my booty. I was exhausted going into Monday, and that was no fun! I really dislike starting my week off tired because it makes me feel like I am playing catch up all week.

-FOUR-

I came across this article [thanks for sharing KTJ], and it really touched me. We are all fighting our own battles, and we all have struggles in life, so be kind to one another. I'll leave you with a reminder to not only be gentle with others, but be gentle with yourself as well.

Finish the Sentence with Jake and Holly

button
Happy hump day, lovelies! It's time for another round of Finish the Sentence, so let's get to it, shall we?

My happy place...is Whole Foods, Hobby Lobby, and/or Sephora. For me, I step into one of these places, and it is instant feel-good vibes.

So what if I....don't refill the ice trays all the time. Kyra doesn't put the toilet paper on the roll, so we're even.

My go-to fast food meal is...Anything Taco Bell, but usually 2 crunchy tacos and a nachos supreme. And, sometimes the nachos are swapped out for a double decker taco.

You might not know that I...like to think of myself as an amateur hair and makeup artist. I have little professional training (Does going to Barbizon count as professional training?), but doing dance hair and makeup over the years has taught me a lot of good tricks. And, when I get my hair or makeup done, I try to pay really close attention to what they're doing, so I can mimic it later. Oh, and also, I wax my own eyebrows!

The hottest quarterback in the NFL is...Sam Bradford, duh! But, my heart will always belong to Kurt Warner.

If I could....I would travel across Europe for 2 months, staying in hostels, eating amazing food, and exploring the other side of the world.

My personality is awesome because...I am fiercely loyal and I love with my whole heart.

Twerking is....just another form of booty shakin'.

I think it's super gross when...people pick their nose and eat it. And when people have dirty elbows. Ew!

Someone needs to tell Miley Cyrus....to put her tongue back in her mouth. I get that she is 20 and wants to make waves, but please, please, please keep your tongue in your mouth, girlfran.

The One Where I Got Published

If you haven't noticed the button on my sidebar, I have a living bucket list that I am keeping track of on Jane Not So Plain. Today, I am happy to announce that I get to mark one of the items of my list!

See the byline? That's me!
I got to contribute a project for the Baby Lock Halloween E-Book! I designed, created, and wrote instructions for the Spooktacular Patchwork Pillow. I love how it turned out, and I love that I got to use my sewing skills, too (I normally just get to use my social media/digital marketing skills).

Working for a sewing machine company really is a dream come true! On a daily basis, I put my advertising/marketing brain to good use, but periodically, I get to put on my creative cap and sew away.

If you are a sew-er or know someone who is, please sign-up for the Baby Lock E-News list, and you'll receive the Halloween E-Book for free!

So What! Wednesday

So What Wednesday

Today, I am joining Life After I Dew for a little So What!? action. Here we go...

So what if I joined SkinnyMeg's DietBet and need to lose about 6 lbs in 28 days. I can do it, and I need to do it. I went to the grocery store yesterday to stock up on lots of healthy and yummy food. Seriously, I have only eaten breakfast and lunch so far today, and I can already tell that I physically feel better. It really does make a world of difference when you put better, more healthy things into your body.

So what if I have a race coming up and I haven't been able to stay completely on track with my training schedule. I still have 5 weeks left to get ready. It'll be tight, but I think I can still make it happen!

So what if Kyra and I are hosting a family BBQ at our place in less than 2 weeks, and the apartments still needs tons of work. But, let's be honest here, I work best under pressure and this will FORCE me to get that ish done!

Lastly, I also want to mention that I recently sewed up a couple cute projects, so you should definitely check them out!

I made a turban as part of the Love My Scarf blog tour to raise awareness about ovarian cancer.

And, I made a quilted hall hanging trio as part of the National Sewing Month celebration.
