Non Scale Victory

Hi lovelies! It's almost time for a LONG weekend! And, let me tell ya, this girl is READY for the weekend. Anyway...

button

I have a semi non-scale victory to share with you guys today. I decided to join Skinny Meg for the DietBet she is hosting in September! Basically, you lay down a bet of $25, weigh in at the beginning, then weigh out at the end. If you lose 4% of your body weight, then you get to split the pot with the others who also achieve the goal. I planned on getting my act together after the weekend, so this is perfect timing. It will be a nice incentive and definitely a great source of accountability.

Another fun thing about it? I will be donating 10% of my winnings to Stray Rescue of St. Louis! Playing for charity is just another reason for me to achieve my goal. We can do this!

If you want to join, read more about how the DietBet will work over on Skinny Meg's blog.

Quick Update

Hey guys! I just wanted to stop in really quick to say a couple things.

First, work has been INSANELY busy! That's the main reason it has been so quiet around here.

Second, this family's story breaks my heart. Send them your prayers and love...they need it in this time.

Lastly, support small busienss and vote for Collette Patterns in Martha Stewart's American Made competition.

Have a great week guys, and I look forward to getting back into a posting routine after the weekend.

And, I will leave you with this cute face...MUAH!

Five on Friday: Fitness Edition

For today's 5 on Friday, I am going to share the fitness gear I am loving right now!

1. Duo Dry Endurance Tanks

Duo Dry Endurance Tank from Target

I got two these tanks for my birthday from my BFF, and they are awesome. They are lightweight, super cute, and don't ride up when I run. An all-around win if you ask me!

2. New Kicks and Socks

These are my first pair of running shoes. They are Saucony Women's Guide 6s, and I love them so far! I bought them from Big River Running Company, and the guy who helped me was awesome. He also helped me pick out socks. They are a little on the expensive side ($13/pair), but they are amazing! The Swiftwick Aspire Zeroes are thin and have a flat toe seam, so no irritation there. I never thought I'd be so excited about sneakers and socks :)

3. Garmin Forerunner 110

It was a rough 4 miles, but I finished.

After I saw this blog post from ElleNoel, I was intrigued. I did some research and started paying attention to other blogging runners and noticed that they all used GPS watches. The longer the runs, the more it will drain my phone battery if I have music playing and MapMyRun going at the same time. So, I decided to add the Garmin Forerunner 110 to my birthday wish list. I have run with it twice already and love it so far!

4. RoadID

Source

I tend to be overly optimistic and like to look at the world with rose colored lenses. With that being said, I don't want to ignore the fact that accidents happen. If I am out on a run and I pass out, get sick, have a run in with a motor vehicle, etc., I want to make sure that first responders know who to call in case of an emergency. Shout out to my mama for surprising me with the Shoe ID for my bday! The Shoe ID is a little tag that velcros through your laces and displays ICE contact info.

5. Yurbuds

I got my Yurbuds about 2 years ago, and I have loved them ever since. They twist and lock into your ear, so they stay put throughout your workout. My ears are on the littler side, and a lot of headphones hurt my ears because they are too big. But, not these!

Another plus? Something about they way they are designed makes it so you don't have to turn your music up as loud, and you can still hear what's going on around you. Seriously, though, if you're in the market for new headphones, get them. They are worth every penny, I promise!

Side note about Yurbuds: They are a St. Louis based company, and they are currently ranked as the top fitness headphone in the United States!

Since I am new at this whole running thing, I am always open to trying out new things, so if you have any favorites you think I should try, please let me know!

Non-Scale Victory

button

Hello JNSPers! I just wanted to pop in today to join this week's NSV Link Up with Ashlee and Katie.

First, I ran my first ever 5K on Saturday! I have walked a few 5Ks in the past, but I have never run one.

Here are my results, according to MapMyRun:

I am so proud of myself! I have been running on the treadmill consistently at 12-13 min. pace, so I never thought in a million years that I would have these results. It was a great way to start my birthday :)

Second, I went on a 2 mile run with Kyra outside on Tuesday evening. We ran the same route that I ran about a month or so ago. The first time I "ran" it, I couldn't run the whole way. This time, not only did I run the whole way, but it was easy. If you would have asked me two months ago if I would be a "runner," I would have told you were nuts.

Ya know, it really is amazing the things your body can do with a little training and a lot of motivation!

PS
I got some new workout/running stuff for my bday AND I bought my first pair of running shoes yesterday...pictures and details coming tomorrow! Yay!

25 Facts for My 25th Birthday

Whoop whoop! Today's my 25th birthday! It's by far my favorite day of the year, so to celebrate, I am sharing 25 facts about me.
  1. My favorite color is purple with turquoise a close second.
  2. I have a fur baby named Shanny. She's a 6-year-old Schnauzer and the sweetest thing ever!
  3. I eat Chipotle at least once a week. Steak burrito bowl, brown rice, black beans, cheese and lettuce. Simple, yet amazingly delicious.
  4. Kyra and I have been together for almost 2 years, but it seems like I've known him my whole life.
  5. I am nowhere near ready to have kids. Ask me again in a couple years. In the mean time, I love being an Auntie!
  6. The Harry Potter books are my favorite. I like other books too, but none of them surpass my love for HP.
  7. I graduated from the University of Missouri with a degree in Journalism (emphasis in advertising/PR) and a minor in Textile and Apparel Management.
  8. I work as a Social Media Coordinator for a sewing machine company.
  9. I still wait tables on Saturdays. I don't HAVE to, but the extra money sure is nice!
  10. I have 4 stars tattooed on my body: one on each foot and two behind my left ear.
  11. When I was little, I would watch the same movies over and over again. The list includes (but was not limited to) Little Giants, Jack, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, and Aladdin.
  12. I can't eat BBQ Chicken Pizza. I ate it one time before I got a stomach bug, so needless to say, just the smell of it makes me nauseous.
  13. I prefer red wine, Malbecs or Red Zinfandels are usually a pretty safe bet with me.
  14. I suffer from anxiety. It's biological, not situational.
  15. I tutored calculus in college. Math nerd, say what!?
  16. I like to eat leftovers for breakfast. And, I like eating them cold. Kyra thinks it's really weird.
  17. It drives me bat sh*t crazy when people question my character. I take a lot of pride in being honest and treating people with respect, so it hurts my feelings if/when people think otherwise.
  18. In reference to #17...of course I'm not perfect. But, I will apologize when I'm in the wrong. It may be hard for me to swallow my pride, but I will try my hardest to make the situation right.
  19. I like to listen to Norah Jones radio on Pandora when I work in the kitchen.
  20. When I need to decompress, I lay in bed and watch TV. It's one of my favorite hobbies :)
  21. I sewed over my finger one time in college. It hurt really bad! I almost passed out...I've almost passed out from needles on multiple occasions.
  22. I have an irrational fear of snakes. It's so bad that I have to change the channel if there's one on TV. And, I can't go anywhere near the Reptile House at the zoo.
  23. I've lived in St. Louis my whole life and have never been up in the Arch.
  24. I can raise just one eyebrow, like The Rock.
  25. Kyra, my family and friends are the bread and butter of my life! Without them, I would be really lonely and really lost.
Also, today's the last day to enter my birthday giveaway!

A Few Things...

Happy Friday, JNSPers! To celebrate the weekend, I want to share a few things with you all...

1. Running

I logged 4.5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. I started with a 1 mile walk, ran 3 miles at about a 13 minute pace, then finished with a half mile walk. First and foremost, I have NEVER run 3 miles before. I have done 5Ks in the past, but I always walked them. Up until a couple weeks ago, I had never run more than a mile at a time, and now I can run 3! I am so proud of myself!

2. Co-Workers

I have the best coworkers EVER! I came in this morning to chocolate crinkle cookies, cake pops, and a Starbucks gift card. I am so lucky that I get to work with such great people!

Follow me on Instagram!
3. Giveaway

Don't forget to enter my Favorite Things giveaway!

4. Our Apartment

I have FINALLY started to get some organization done and a little decorating done around our apartment. Kyra and I are hosting a BBQ for family on September 15th, so I have given myself that deadline to get everything done. Don't worry, I will be taking pictures and will do a virtual home tour post once it's complete!

5. #BackThatAzzUp

I am absolutely LOVING this song right now! Every time it comes on, I can't help but dance and sing along.

Non Scale Victories

button

I'm not gonna lie to you guys...My eating habits have not been stellar lately. With the busyness that vacation brings and trying to get back into the swing of things, I haven't been planning out my meals. When that happens, convenience foods end up being a go to. I haven't had much fast food, but my meals certainly haven't been very nutritious either.

Though my eating hasn't been great, there have been a couple things that I have done that are helping me move in the right direction.

First, like I mentioned yesterday, I got back on track with a running routine. I had my first run of the week on Tuesday and will be logging 5 miles today. It's supposed to be a tempo run that will start with a 1 mile walking warm up and end with a 1 mile walking cool down. So, really it'll only be 3 solid miles of running at the same pace. Completely doable (hopefully, anyway)!

Second, I am in the process of testing out some Lifeway Kefir products.* Kefir is a cultured probiotic beverage, similar to drinkable yogurt. Here are the products that I am testing:

So far, I have only tried the Chocolate Truffle Kefir, once by itself and once in a protein shake. It's tart and not that chocolatey by itself. But it was much better in the shake!

Here's what I did for the shake: 4oz. Chocolate Kefir, 4oz. Chocolate Almond Milk, 2 tbsp PB2, and 2 scoops sweet cream protein, and it was pretty yummy. It was thick, and it made me really full!

I will keep you all posted about the rest of the flavors and other things I make with it as I continue taste testing it all!

Here's why I consider trying Lifeway Kefir a non-scale victory:

  • It's made with organic milk, free of rBGH
  • 99% lactose free
  • Gluten free
  • One serving provides 30% daily value of calcium and 28% daily value of protein.
Since my nutrition isn't always where it should be, I am ALWAYS up for trying new things that will help me get the nutrients I need to live a healthier life.

*These products were provided to me for free or at a discount by Influenster. All opinions are my own!

Work Out Wednesday

button

It's time for another edition of Work Out Wednesday with Skinny Meg

I mentioned last week that I was slacking with my running schedule, so I had to readjust some things. Since I am a first-time runner, I was kind of lost as to how I wanted to get back on track. But then, I discovered a hand-dandy tool on Runner's World...

Source
SmartCoach allows you to create custom training schedules. Basically, you put in your start date, race date, pace, and running experience/level. And, it develops a plan that fits your needs and preferences.

This tool helped me get back on track, and it allowed be to get excited again about my upcoming goals! I highly recommend checking it out if you need a custom running plan.

Also, don't forget! I am hosting a "Favorite Things" giveaway to kick off my birthday celebration!

Who Are You?

Photobucket

Today, I'm joining Kimmy to share a little bit about myself for her "Who Are You?" series.

Describe 10 5 Pet Peeves You Have

  1. People who ride my tail in the slow lane. There's a "fast lane" for a reason.
  2. People who have zero consideration for those around them. Everyone deserves at least some amount of respect from you.
  3. Bad tippers and people who come into a restaurant right before the kitchen closes. If you can't afford to tip decently, don't go out to eat. I'm not saying you always have to tip 20% or more, but you should be able to tip at least 15%.
  4. Close-minded people. Everyone has a story...yes, it may be a different story than yours, but that doesn't make any of us less of a human being.
  5. One-uppers/brand pushers. For example, "I just got a new phone," versus, "I just got an iPhone 5, plus a really cute bedazzled Kate Spade case to go with it." Don't get me wrong, I like Kate Spade and would love to have an iPhone 5, but there are more important things in life than one-upping each other.

Describe a Typical Day in Your Life

Hit snooze for at least an hour, let Shanny Mae out while I am getting ready, go to work, maybe go to the gym after work, go home, eat dinner, then maybe do laundry/do the dishes, and/or watch TV. Pretty typical and not that exciting.

What's the hardest part of growing up?

Always having to think about money. I am definitely much more aware now that everything costs and each purchase has an effect on my finances.

Describe 5 Strengths and Weakness You have.

Strengths
Loyalty
Giving 100%
Loving with all my heart
Being creative

Weaknesses
Being  uptight
Procrastination
Punctuality
Perpetual resting mean mug...I really don't mean to shoot you dirty looks, but when I am lost in thought, I tend to have a "mean mug"

Describe When You Knew Your Spouse Boyfriend Was the One or How You Fell in Love

I always knew Kyra was different from all the rest. I can't pinpoint the exact day that I knew Kyra was the one, but he literally shows me so much love every single day. Just the way he is with me and my family, it makes me love him more every day. Honestly, he loves me the way that I always hoped and dreamed someone would. It's hard to explain sometimes, but he really is my other half.

One of these days, I will write a post about how we met and fell in love. It's a good one :)
